The Ocotillo Trail Hiking Trip 46

Hiking Trip #46

Date: April 26, 2018

Goal: Hike the NEW trial at Kartchner caverns, The Ocotillo Trail

Weather: AZ BEAUTIFUL, very slightly over cast, warm…. And would get much warmer as hike proceeded!! High of 88!

Trail: The Ocotillo Trail

Hiking Partner: Scott Weiss

Distance: only 3.8 miles see below for reason

Start Elevation: 4,721 ft

End Elevation Same Start finish same location

Elevation Change: 390 ft

Accumulated Gain: 390 ft

Calories Burned: 886 (this is a new feature of All Trails App)

Do It Again: YES! But next time combine Guindani Trail loop for a little longer and little more strenuous hike.

Comments: Since this is a brand new trail we stopped at main gate to see where to pick up the trail and how long it was. The trail is actually a spur off the Foothills Trail and since it was relatively short we decided to park at the Guindani Trailhead hike over to Foothills Trial and proceed from there. Both the Foothills and Ocotillo Trails are well marked and both are easy to hike. There is not a lot of elevation change so these trails are well suited to almost anyone!

This is the first hike Scott and I have done since he tore his Achilles Tendon 30%. He did well and had no problems; this was a good choice of trails to get back in the hiking groove! We are fortunate to have so many trails nearby and such BEATIFUL scenery to hike in, these trails do not disappoint!!

On the Foothills Trail near Kartchner Caverns is a plaque describing a what is called a “Bedrock Mortar”. The American Indians used their to grind their grains.
